Professional introduction

Dr. Tunde Olarinoye

Water Resources Scientist | Hydrology & Environmental Data Expert | International Advisor

I am a water resources scientist specialising in hydrology, environmental data systems and the application of scientific knowledge to sustainable water management.

My work brings together hydrological research, in-situ observations, geospatial analysis and digital innovation to improve our understanding of water systems and support informed decision-making.

With a multidisciplinary academic background and professional experience in international scientific cooperation, I work at the intersection of research, data and development. My interests include soil moisture monitoring, hydrological modelling, water information systems, climate resilience and strengthening the scientific foundations of water resources management.

I am particularly interested in collaborations that connect scientific institutions, universities, governments and international development organisations to address pressing water and environmental challenges.

I welcome opportunities for research collaboration, technical advisory, consulting, academic engagement and strategic partnerships.

Selected research

Research and scientific contributions

My research asks how water moves through landscapes, how we can observe it reliably, and how that knowledge can be turned into data and evidence that institutions can use. It combines process-based hydrology, large-sample analysis and international data infrastructure.

World Karst Spring Hydrographs (WoKaS)

Compiled the first global open database of karst spring discharge from literature, hydrological databases and researchers worldwide, giving hydrologists a common basis to compare how karst aquifers behave in different climates.

Output 400+ springs; published in Scientific Data (2020), the primary reference for comparative karst research.

Soil moisture monitoring and global observation networks

The International Soil Moisture Network (ISMN) is a global hub for in-situ soil moisture observations, with data collection, harmonisation, advanced quality control and free, FAIR access. It is widely used to validate satellite and model products.

Output As presented at IAHS 2025, more than 80 data providers and 3,000 stations, with time series from 1952 to near real time.

Water information systems

Hydrological data integration and information systems

Work on how global hydrological data centres and networks can be better connected and communicated, so that data services serve research, monitoring and water management together.

Output A recurring forum for hydrological data services and new links between global data centres.

Hydrological modelling · Climate resilience

Hydroclimatic processes and water resources

Developed objective, automated methods to separate and classify the fast (conduit) and slow (matrix) components of spring recession, and tested them on large samples of hydrographs across contrasting climates.

Output Replaces manual, subjective analysis and makes large-sample studies feasible (HESS, 2022).

Advisory & consulting

Expertise that connects science with action

Scientific knowledge creates the greatest impact when it informs decisions, strengthens institutions and supports practical solutions.

I work with research institutions, universities, government agencies, international organisations and development partners on water resources, hydrology, environmental data and sustainable water management.

Whether you are developing a research initiative, designing a water-related programme, seeking technical expertise or exploring an institutional partnership, I welcome the opportunity to connect.

Let's work together to advance water knowledge and solutions.

International collaboration

Working across institutions, disciplines and borders

Water challenges rarely follow administrative boundaries, and neither does the science needed to address them. My work connects global data centres, research networks and international programmes, from UNESCO and WMO structures to IAHS working groups and European research initiatives.

Training and research across Nigeria, the Netherlands, Portugal, Germany and Tanzania, with fieldwork in France, Spain and the United Kingdom, has shaped a practical understanding of how science, data and policy meet in different contexts.
